Art Triangle

Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen Bornemisza

Art Triangle or Golden Triangle refers to the group of museums in Madrid located in the area of Paseo del Prado, situated between the old town of Madrid and Retiro Park. The three points of the triangle are the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia Museum, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.

  • The Prado Museum is one of the three most important art galleries in the world and the most visited museum in Spain. It is especially rich in paintings by European artists from the 15th to the 19th century. Its great attraction is the presence of Velázquez, Goya (the painter with the most works in the collection), Titian, and Rubens, of whom it has the largest concentration of paintings in the world.
  • The Reina Sofia Museum is Spain’s premier museum of 20th-century and contemporary art. Among its numerous masterpieces, Picasso’s Guernica stands out, inspired by the terrible aerial bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. The collection also includes artists such as Dalí, Miró, Andy Warhol, Basquiat, Juan Gris, and Chillida.
  • The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is another great art gallery with works from the 13th to the 20th century. It comprises a vast collection of artworks gathered by the Thyssen-Bornemisza family over seven decades. This collection brought great artists absent in Spain, such as Duccio, Jan van Eyck, pop art, Lucian Freud, etc. Therefore, it complemented and formed the Golden Triangle along with the Prado and Reina Sofia.

About Madrid

Madrid, the vibrant capital of Spain, is a city where history and culture come alive at every corner.

Rising amid the central mountain ranges of Spain, this is the late-night city of Dalí and Hemingway, Ronaldo and Picasso, and those fast-talking ’80s melodramas by Pedro Almodóvar.

There is imperial baroque, andpost-industrial cityscapes, street markets and seriously good museums. Despite its size and capital status, Madrid was often overlooked by those heading to Barcelona and the coast. But it emerged from Spain’s economic downturn with its head held up high and a renewed appetite for inventivemenus, opening up new green spaces such as the Madrid Rio and fresh-faced arts hubs.

Plenty of hipcafés, yes, like the ones on Calle Ponzano, but also those family-run joints that have endured fordecades, where it’s possible to chow down for a handful of euros. Rather than meeting it head-on,best to approach it through its different barrios, all with different characters, from upscale Salamanca to unbuttoned Chueca and multicultural Lavapiés. And to really feel part of the scene, step out on “La Marcha,” hopping from one vermouth bar to another all evening long and making friends along theway.

Madrid seems to be made for
the comfort of human life

– Ernest Hemingway
